The general secretary of the PSOE and president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has put Zohran Mamdani’s victory in winning the mayor of New York as an example that “history is not written” and that social democracy, as a “model that gives results”, has a future against the ultra-conservative wave that is sweeping the world.
Sánchez has described that the social democratic model “increases salaries, public services, freedoms, protects the vulnerable and modernizes the economy without leaving people behind.” “Where progressives govern, people live better, societies are more stable and democracies are stronger,” he summarized. Faced with this, “unregulated markets do not protect people, nationalism does not create opportunities, austerity does not build a future.”
He has given the example of Mamdani’s victory in New York, which he believes does not have to be an exception. “His victory is a sign of where the energy lies today, in those who offer hope and not fear,” he said, urging optimism. “History is not written, it is not programmed by algorithms, it belongs to the people. We are here to serve those people, empower voices and fulfill the dreams and aspirations of those people.”
