The Italians also have Roberto Fico. The namesake of the Slovak prime minister became the president of Campania

Roberto Fico, a longtime member and one of the founding representatives of the Five Star Movement (M5S), has become the new president of the Italian region of Campania. The politician, known for his more left-wing positions within the movement, is returning to executive politics at the head of one of the key southern regions where he began his political career.

Roberto Fico (M5S), the namesake of the Slovak prime minister, achieved a convincing victory in the regional elections in the Italian region of Campania, which took place on November 23 and 24, 2025. He defeated his opponents by a significant margin and thus confirmed his strong position in the south of Italy. Fico became the new president of the region, although voter turnout was lower compared to the previous period.

Roberto Fico was born in Naples in 1974. He entered politics in 2005. In his early years, he focused primarily on environmental issues, the fight against waste discharge and environmental protection. In 2009, he became a member of the newly formed Five Star Movement, but his first candidacies – for the post of president of the region in 2010 and mayor of Naples a year later – were not successful.

The breakthrough came with the parliamentary elections in 2013, when Fico was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. At the age of 38, he became the chairman of the supervisory commission for RAI public television.

He obtained his highest political position to date in 2018, when he was elected Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. At the age of 43, he demonstrated his departure from the traditional political elite by arriving at his first meeting in Montecito instead in a public transport vehicle.

Fico remained active in the regional politics of Campania, which eventually resulted in his official candidacy and victory in the regional elections.
