Former leader of the Labor Party Jeremy Corbyn He has embarked on a new political adventure to try to overshadow his old party. The platform Your Party (Your Party) celebrates its inaugural congress with the objective of laying the foundations of its organizational structure, choosing a definitive name and setting the direction of the organization after several months of doubts and ups and downs. Corbyn trusts that the new formation will emerge as a left-wing alternative to the current Government’s turn to the right, but the internal disputes and the disagreements between the promoters of the initiative threaten to sink the project just a few months after its birth.
The new political project has been promoted by Corbyn and another old acquaintance of the Labor Party, the deputy Zarah Sultanawho confirmed her departure from her former party last July after almost a year suspended by the leadership. In addition to Corbyn and Sultana, others joined the initiative four independent deputies from markedly left-wing constituencies, in which the current position of the Government on issues such as Gaza or social policies have raised blisters.
Internal tensions
Las differences between Sultana and Corbyn They have been constant since they announced, in an uncoordinated manner, the founding of the new party just five months ago. Of the four deputies who supported the project, two have distanced themselves from it in recent weeks. The first of them, Adnan Hussainjustified his departure by “persistent infighting” and the battle for power. “Instead of openness, cooperation and outward focus, the environment has too often been perceived as toxic, exclusionary and deeply discouraging”Hussain said in a message published on the social network X. The second deputy to abandon the project, Iqbal Mohameddid so just a few days later due to “the numerous false accusations and defamations” against him and other people in the organization.
The enthusiasm with which a part of the left-wing electorate received the creation of the party – the initiative included hundreds of thousands of signatures before being a reality—has been deflating in recent months due to internal tension. According to a survey published this Friday by the YouGov population center, a 12% of the electorate I would consider vote for the new formationin front of a 18% who expressed the same opinion last julywhen its foundation was confirmed.
Left alternative
The objective of this weekend’s conference is leave these disputes behind and row in the same direction to be able to stand up to Labor in the next general elections, especially in London and elsewhere urban constituencies of England. “It is not simply about another political party. It is about doing politics in another way: where We make the decisions togetherpower returns to the communities and principles come first,” indicates the party, which wants to focus on community organization, internationalism, the nationalization of resources and the wealth redistribution.
The main challenge of the new training will be define your own identity and differentiate itself from other left-wing political options, especially the Verdesa party that is booming in the polls after the election of its new leader, Zack Polanski. The electoral system of the United Kingdom – in which each constituency elects the candidate with the most votes as MP, regardless of the difference in votes with respect to his competitors – represents an added challenge, since there is a risk that the two parties divide the leftist votereducing the chances of their respective candidates. Corbyn’s party still has work to do in that regard: 85% of its potential voters are also open to voting for the Greens in the next general election.
