Searches have been underway since Thursday for the 76-year-old British man who fell from a cruise ship heading to the Canaries.

A 76-year-old British tourist has been missing since Thursday, the date he fell from a cruise ship that had left Madeira and was heading to the Canary Islands.

According to a statement cited by , the ship’s company, Marella Cruises, operated by Tui UK, “deeply regrets to confirm that uA passenger was seen falling into the water while the ship was on its way to La Gomera“, a Spanish island off the African coast.

“Our thoughts are with the person and their loved ones at this difficult time. Our dedicated care team is supporting the family, offering assistance and comfort. We are working closely with local authorities and we will continue to offer all possible support”, reads the press release.

The ship is called Marella Explorer 2 and will depart from Tenerife, Spain, on November 21st. The itinerary included a tour of nearby Spanish islands, as well as a visit to Madeira Island. It was on the return journey that the fall occurred.

The search continues for the tourist who remains missing, with the help of rescue vessels, two helicopters and a specialized aircraft.
