The leader of the Liberal Initiative, Mariana Leitão
Liberals were practically at the level of JPP, in a list led by the parties that support the Government, PSD and CDS-PP.
As happens every year, after presenting the Government’s budget proposal for Status for 2026os parties presented suggestions for changesalternative measures.
This year there was record: 2,176 proposals for changes to the document. The biggest “slice”, by far, was from Chega, which presented 614 suggestions.
The party that presented the fewest proposals was JPP, with 50. It was also the one that received the fewest approvals, just 2.
PSD and CDS-PP were left with 57 proposals – but achieved the majority of approvals: 41.
The third party force with the fewest proposals presented was the IL, com 112. But, of these 112 suggestions, they were approved… only 3.
In other words, it was practically at the level of JPP approvals – which, however, had presented less than half of the proposals, compared to the liberals.
In the debate around , Mariana Leitão said that the Portuguese will be “worse off” with this State Budget.
“The truth is that there is no better country with worse Portuguese. And all of this has a name: lack of courage. Lack of courage to seriously change State spending, lack of courage to cut installed privileges, lack of courage to simplify laws, licenses, authorizations, opinions that delay investment and kill opportunities”, commented the IL leader in Parliament.
According to Leitão, it is necessary to tell the Portuguese that “there are no miracles” and that it is essential to reform the State. Or else we will continue “to have salaries from a poor country, with taxes from a rich country”.
Mariana Leitão thinks that the State Budget treats the Portuguese “as a footnote in statistics”. And, therefore, the document is a “political and moral error”.
But it was IL that made a clear error: out of 112 proposals, only 3 were approved. It is the lowest percentage of all parties: 2,7%behind Chega’s 3.25% – with 20 proposals approved out of a total of 614.
One of them is a support for sports associations for people with disabilities; another is the VAT exemption on motor vehicles adapted by institutions; and guarantees the exemption from Vehicle Tax for adapted cars from non-profit sports associations and federations.
IL stopped there.
