Roses are undoubtedly among the most beautiful ornamental shrubs in Polish gardens. They are classic and breathtakingly beautiful, which is why all generations love them. However, in order for them to always look wonderful, you need to take proper care of them before winter arrives.
How to protect roses against frost? It’s simple, and you’ll thank yourself for it next seasonbecause they will reward you with healthy growth and literally flood the garden with waves. Especially if you use the old grandma trick.
Burying rusty metal under roses (i.e. nails, rods, bolts or wires) is a trick that has long divided gardeners. Some say it has no visible effect, others are delighted with it and use it every year to prevent chlorosis and give them vigor.
The idea is to provide plants with iron oxide, which is found in rusty metal objects. There is a common belief that burying them in moist soil will gradually release this substance into the ground, thanks to which the rose bushes will be able to use them and thus strengthen themselves.
The metal should be buried at the base of the bush or driven vertically to a depth of 5-9 centimeters, halfway between the trunk and the edge.being careful not to hurt yourself. You can also prepare it using rusty objects by pouring 1 liter of water over them. After 4 days you can water the bushes.
Remember, however, that the above method should only be an addition to other measures to protect roses in winter (it is not supported by research, but only an old, used method, the effectiveness of which can be disputed).
It’s worth taking it with a pinch of salt and doing it too other actions, such as removing old leaves, faded flowers and mulching, which will actually reduce the risk of diseases and contribute to improving the condition of the plant.
First, get rid of old leaves and faded flowers and clean up the space around the rose bushes. This will also reduce the chance of pests overwintering. Also, be sure to fluff it up top layer of soil to improve its permeability.
Before the ground freezes completely, make sure to mound it. Dig a mound of peat or regular garden soil. Thanks to this, the rose roots will be better protected against low temperatures and strong winds.
If it won’t hurt to cover the above-ground part of the roses agrotextile. It will need to be wrapped loosely around the bushes and tied lightly with string so that the cover does not directly touch the shoots.
