The general, sentenced to 21 years in prison, revealed during a medical examination that since 2018. A year after this diagnosis, he became head of the Institutional Security Office.
This was not the only trouble Augusto Heleno went through. On the morning of October 21, 1977, Captain Augusto Heleno was aide-de-camp to the Minister of the Army, General Silvio Frota. Who had just been fired by the president.
At around 10 am, from his boss’s car, he tried to call General Fernando Bethlem, commander of the Southern garrisons, summoning him to the High Command meeting in which Frota intended to block Geisel. He didn’t find it, as Bethlem had gone to Palácio do Planalto, where he received the invitation to take on the ministry.
A year later, Augusto Heleno was monitored by the National Information Service: “It is worth remembering that cavalry captain Augusto Heleno, former aide-de-camp to General Silvio Frota and who continues to maintain close ties with him, and parachute infantry captain Burnier (son of Brigadier Burnier) and linked to General Hugo Abreu, will attend the Officers’ Improvement School.”
In 2008, frontiersman Sydney Possuelo compared him to American colonel George Custer (1839-1876), who massacred Sioux Indians and was massacred in the Little Big Horn battle. In 2018, the year he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, General Heleno said at the Escola Superior de Guerra that, “when specific operations begin [do Exército no Rio]there will be a bunch of guys yelling about human rights. If human rights don’t have human rights, we have to fix that first.”
He said further: “Colombia spent 50 years in civil war because they didn’t do what we did in Araguaia.”
Heleno never explained what “we did in Araguaia”. There the Army fought a guerrilla and killed not only the combatants, but also the guerrillas who surrendered.
Military troubles are in the general’s family history. In 1912, his grandfather, the then frigate captain Augusto Heleno, was appointed to the War Council that judged the rebellious sailors in what became known as the Whip Revolt.
in the Planalto Military Command, and his conviction became final. Even so, there is a doubt. At the fateful meeting on July 5, 2022, before the election, therefore, he said:
“There will be no review of the VAR. So, whatever has to be done has to be done before the elections. If we have to shake things up, it’s before the elections. If we have to turn the tables, it’s before the elections.”
He admitted turning the tables before, but that he intended to carry out the coup after the election.
