After finishing runner-up in the Libertadores for Flamengo, São Paulo faces the last two rounds of the Brazilian Championship, where they have a remote chance of winning the title.
The atmosphere is not the best after the 1-0 defeat in the World Cup final, on Saturday (29), at the Monumental stadium in Lima. The Alviverde delegation arrived at Guarulhos International Airport in silence this Sunday morning (30), but prepared to deal with the frustration of their fans.
Outraged, Palmeiras fans vented on social media after the match, bothered mainly by the team’s attitude in the defeat that prevented the Alviverde team from winning their fourth continental title.
The few fans present at disembarkation, shortly before 7am, however, were also returning from the Peruvian capital and did not disturb the group. The athletes avoided contact with the press and fans at the venue and left directly on two buses for the Football Academy, in the west of São Paulo, from where they were released.
Palmeiras reinforced the security scheme at the entrance to the Alviverde training center, but no fans were present to welcome the team. The players took their cars and went home, except for defender Gustavo Gómez and midfielder Emiliano Martínez, who live close to the place, and left the CT on foot.
Now, coach Abel Ferreira will have the tough task of restoring the squad’s morale for the final two matches of the season, in which the team has a remote chance of winning the title. With five points less than leader Flamengo, the Alviverde team will need to beat Atlético-MG, on Wednesday (3), and Ceará, next Sunday (7), and hope for the competitor to add, at most, one point against Ceará and Mirassol.
