The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) expects cloudy to cloudy and foggy weather in the coming days, with reduced cloud cover in places. Precipitation will be mostly light, mainly in the form of drizzle or light rain. SHMÚ informed about it on the social network.
“The probability of snowfall in lower elevations is low. The night frosts will ease and the temperature may stay above zero even at night. During the day, the temperature will be mostly positive, where the cloudiness decreases, even noticeably higher,” the meteorologists said. “Unfortunately, even in the winter season, difficult-to-predict phenomena lie in wait for us, who are dedicated to forecasting the development of the atmosphere, so to speak. Among them is a forecast of fog, low cloud cover, or ice,”
SHMÚ recalled that after the dynamic weather at the beginning of the week, a different situation arose. Above Slovakia, the edge of the pressure high extends from the northeast, and warmer air is found in the upper layers of the atmosphere. “The flow is weak and we are seeing a temperature inversion that is most pronounced in the morning hours, but in many places it will persist all day. Low cloud is forming and algal high cloud is increasing from the southeast,” he describes.
In such a situation, according to SHMÚ, it is difficult to predict the maximum daily temperatures and where the sun will or will not shine. With cloudy skies, frost can persist throughout the day, but if the low clouds break up, temperatures can rise quickly. “Sometimes fog does not even have to form, but in a prominent valley, the air does not have time to warm up at the bottom of the valley during a short day, while it can be significantly warmer already 200-300 meters above.,” noted the experts.
Meteorologists drew attention to a significant temperature inversion, which they also recorded on Saturday. Significant differences were observed especially in the Nitra region. “In its south, there were low clouds and the temperature was only slightly above zero. On the contrary, in the north, in a higher location, the sun shone and the temperature rose to almost eight degrees Celsius“, they stated.
