
The price of flour and sugar has been falling since the beginning of the year, but the value of eggs is expected to make Christmas sweets more expensive, registering an increase of almost 32% since the beginning of the year.
The price of eggs suffered a worsening of 31.68% since the beginning of the year. According to data sent to Lusa by Deco, on January 1st, half a dozen eggs it cost 1.61 eurosbut on November 19th the same box was already 2,12 euros.
This value, the highest of the year, was reached on October 22, a date from which it has remained stable until now. In turn, the level of 1.61 reached on January 1st was the lowest value of the yearand continued until the 29th of the same month.
At the beginning of February, half a dozen eggs became a cent more expensive and the price began its upward trajectory. Only between March 19th and 26th, the price of half a dozen eggs went from 1.70 euros to 2.05 euros.
According to Deco in March, the increase in the price of eggs may have been caused by a bird flu outbreakwhich had led to an escalation in egg prices in the United States of America, where the product had reached record prices in previous weeks.
Not all ingredients commonly used to make Christmas sweets, have seen price increases. Since the beginning of the year, and also until the 19th of this month, the price of white sugar and cake flour has been falling.
In the case of white sugarthe value was 1.26 euros per kilogram at the beginning of this year, and dropped to 1.17 euross on November 19, that is, there was a drop of 7.14%.
Still, throughout this period the valuesuffered several oscillationshaving, for example, reached a maximum of 1.30 euros on May 21st. The lowest price was recorded on November 12th: 1.15 euros.
In turn, the cake flour price there was a decrease of 14.75% in the period under analysis, going from 1.83 euros per kg to 1.56 euros. The highest value, of 1.87 euros, was reached on February 19th, and was repeated on March 19th and May 7th. The minimum, of 1.57 euros per kg, was reached on September 24th.
