Donald Trump talks about the chance for peace between Ukraine and Russia. After the negotiations in Florida, he emphasized that the corruption situation in Ukraine is not useful and its reform will be necessary.
After his team’s talks with Ukrainian officials in Florida on Sunday, US President Donald Trump said there was a “good chance” of reaching an agreement to end the war between Ukraine and Russia. At the same time, he stated that the corruption scandal that affected the government in Kyiv does not help this effort. TASR informs about it with reference to CNN.
“There are some difficult issues in Ukraine,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, alluding to “an ongoing corruption situation that is not helpful.”
Progress in negotiations
“But I think there’s a good chance we can get a deal,” Trump said.
An investigation into corruption in the energy sector forced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to dismiss his office chief and chief negotiator Andriy Jermak last week.
According to him, the talks to reach an agreement are “continuing and continuing well”. “We want to prevent people from being killed,” stated the head of the White House. He added that he spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his special envoy Steve Witkoff after talks with Ukrainian officials on Sunday.
Zelensky’s position
In a post on Platform X after the talks in Florida, Zelensky thanked Trump for the time he is devoting to efforts to end the war with Russia.
“It is important that the talks have a constructive dynamic and that all issues are discussed openly and with a focus on ensuring the sovereignty and national interests of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy wrote.
According to AFP, a source from the Trump administration said on Sunday that Witkoff will travel to Moscow on Monday, where he is expected to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin the following day.
