Gleisi rebuts Alcolumbre and denies “physiologism” in the relationship between government and Senate

The Minister of Institutional Relations responded in X to the note released earlier by the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), in which he accused sectors of the Executive of creating the “false impression” that the current crisis between the Powers can be resolved by “physiological adjustments”.

Gleisi said that the government would never consider lowering the institutional relationship with the president of the Senate to “any kind of physiology or negotiations of positions and amendments”. “The government rejects such insinuations, in the same way as the president of the Senate did in a note today, as they are offensive to the truth, to both institutions and their leaders”, said the minister on the social network.

Gleisi argued that the criterion of mutual institutional respect guided the government’s appointment and consideration, by the Senate, of two of the current STF ministers, the Attorney General of the Republic and directors of the Central Bank and regulatory agencies. “All these processes were carried out with transparency and loyalty on both sides, respecting the prerogatives of the Executive in nominating names and of the Federal Senate in appraising the nominees.”, he added.

Alcolumbre’s note was released after the publication of articles in the press that reported that he was using his dissatisfaction with the nomination of the name of the Attorney General of the Union (AGU), Jorge Messias, to obtain advantages from the Executive.

Without mentioning Messias, Alcolumbre said that the Senate has the prerogative to choose the nominee for the STF, “approving or rejecting the name”. “If the prerogative of the President of the Republic to nominate a minister to the STF is certain, so is the prerogative of the Senate to choose, approving or rejecting the name. And it is essential that, in this process, the Powers respect each other and that each one fulfills their role in accordance with constitutional and regulatory norms”, he added.

The senator also stated that the fact that the Executive has not yet sent the message with the appointment of Messias to the Senate appears to be an “undue interference” in the schedule established by the House, which scheduled the hearing for December 10th. Behind the scenes, members of the government said that the deadline is short and could demonstrate an attempt by Alcolumbre to reduce the deadline for Messias’ campaign through the votes of senators.

He added that setting the voting schedule is the Senate’s prerogative. “The deadline stipulated for the hearing is consistent with almost all previous indications and allows the definition to take place in 2025, avoiding the delay that, at other times, was so criticized”.
