Gleisi says he has respect for Alcolumbre after criticism

Lula’s minister says that the government “rejects” insinuations that the Executive was trying to provide physiological contours in exchange for supporting the Messiah

The minister of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, stated this Sunday (30.nov.2025) that the president’s government tem “the highest respect and recognition” by the president of the Senate, (União Brasil-AP), and that he would never downgrade the institutional relationship with the senator “to any kind of physiology or negotiations of positions and amendments”.

The message by the minister on her profile on X is a response to the note by Alcolumbre earlier. The president of the Senate had said that there is a “attempt of sectors of the Executive” to give physiological contours to possible divergences between the Powers. According to him, this is an attempt to create “the false impression” that institutional conflicts are resolved “with positions and amendments”.

“This is offensive not only to the President of the National Congress, but to the entire Legislative Branch”stated Alcolumbre. “No Power should judge itself above another, and no one has a monopoly on reason.”

Gleisi countered: “The government rejects such insinuations, in the same way as the president of the Senate did in a note today, as they are offensive to the truth, to both institutions and their leaders”.

Lula’s minister cited other Executive nominations that passed through the Senate.

“The criterion of mutual institutional respect presided over the government’s nomination and consideration by the Federal Senate of 2 of the current ministers of the STF, of the Attorney General of the Republic, on two occasions, and of directors of the Central Bank and regulatory agencies. All these processes were carried out with transparency and loyalty on both sides, respecting the prerogatives of the Executive in nominating names and of the Federal Senate in appraising the nominees”he wrote.

The disagreement occurs days before nominated by Lula for the by minister Luiz Roberto Barroso. The CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) scheduled the analysis for December 10th – the government is trying to postpone it. The hearing is the initial stage before the name goes to the Senate plenary. Alcolumbre is upset after Lula did not choose (PSD-MG) for the vacancy.

Messiah has today according to a survey by Poder360. Seven senators are against, 3 did not respond and 6 did not want to anticipate their position. It needs at least 14 votes to be approved by the commission.

The scenario is favorable to the Union’s attorney general. Among those who did not declare a position are (MDB-AL) e (PSB-CE), who usually vote with the government. That would give him 13 votes. The vote, however, is secret – it would be necessary to convince at least 1 more senator.

If he advances, Messias will face a greater challenge in the plenary: he needs 41 of the 81 votes. The government base totals around 30. There are still 11 pieces of support left.
