Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), ordered the Federal Police to prepare an expert report within 15 days on the health of the retired general and former minister, 78, one of the following.
Upon being arrested, the former minister of Bolsonaro’s GSI (Institutional Security Office) who has been suffering from an illness since 2018. The general’s defense asked for house arrest to be granted to him.
According to Uol, Heleno’s defense stated in a petition sent to the STF that the soldier was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2025, not in 2018, as he had said when arrested.
“Due to contradictory information, the analysis of the request made by the Defense initially requires effective proof of the diagnosis of mixed dementia (Alzheimer’s and vascular). In view of the above, I order the preparation of an expert report by medical experts from the Federal Police, within 15 (fifteen) days, with the completion of a complete clinical assessment, including the medical history, exams and laboratory evaluations”, determined Moraes.
On Saturday (29), Moraes gave five days for the reserve general’s defense to present documents on the soldier’s health status and his health.
The minister requested documents proving the consultations and the doctors who monitored the evolution of the disease throughout this period.
“The Defense must also clarify whether, due to the position held between 2019 and 2022, the defendant communicated his diagnosis to the health service of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry or any body”, he added.
Alzheimer’s disease was not brought to light by the military’s defense throughout the course of the coup plot process.
In the order, Moraes also made reference to the fact that Heleno was minister of the (Institutional Security Office) during the period in which he had already received the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.
“However, no document, examination, report, news or proof of the presence of symptoms contemporaneous to the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 was added to the case; including the period in which the defendant held the position of Minister of State of the Institutional Security Cabinet, whose structure encompasses the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) — responsible for information of intelligence sensitive to National Sovereignty—, since all the exams accompanying the medical report were carried out in 2024”, wrote the minister.
