NATO considers taking a step further in its response to Russia. As stated to the Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, at the head of the Military Committee of the Atlantic Alliance, NATO studies “being more aggressive or proactive instead of reactive”especially in relation to what are known as hybrid attacks, that is, cyberattacks or sabotage of a different nature.
According to the aforementioned newspaper, From Eastern Europe, several diplomats “have urged NATO to stop being merely reactive and counterattack”to which the military chief of the Alliance has responded by assuring that “it could be an option.”
The problem lies, according to Dragone himself, in that NATO member countries, as well as the Alliance itself, have “many more limitations” than Russia “for ethical, legal and jurisdictional reasons”. “I don’t want to say that this is a losing position, but it is more complex than that of our adversary. We need to analyze in depth how deterrence is achieved, through retaliation or through a preemptive strike?” he asked.
Russia has been quick to respond to NATO warnings. The spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, has called the military chief’s statements “extremely irresponsible.” “We see a deliberate attempt to undermine efforts to overcome the Ukrainian crisis. Those making such statements must be aware of the risks and possible consequences, including for Alliance members themselves.“Warned Zakharova for her part.
Dragone’s statements come while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in office. tenth visit to France since Russia invaded his country. The president will meet with the French president, Emmanuel Macron, in full discussions about the plan proposed by Donald Trump.
For its part, Vladimir Putin will meet this Tuesday with Steve Witkoffthe US government’s special envoy to address the US plan.
