Party accuses president of bringing forward the 2026 campaign by announcing exemption from Income Tax and seeks reimbursement for broadcasting expenses
The PSDB announced that it will take legal action against President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT) as a result of the statement made on national radio and television this Sunday (30). The party leadership alleges that the president used the official government structure to promote his pre-candidacy for re-election in 2026, deviating from the institutional and informative nature required for this type of communication.
The decision to call the Superior Electoral Court () was confirmed by tucana leaders, including the federal deputy and recently elected president of the party, . According to the parliamentarian, Lula’s speech was not limited to reporting or informing the population, but took the form of an advertising piece with an electoral bias.
“At no point did he speak as head of state or government. He spoke as a candidate for re-election. It was not an institutional speech, but a pre-campaign publicity piece”, stated Aécio.
Reimbursement request
In addition to denouncing the alleged advance propaganda, the PSDB’s action will request that the PT or the president himself reimburse the public coffers for the costs of the broadcast. “It was a free electoral program. This creates a problem for democracy: the advantage of those in power”, added Aécio Neves.
The IR exemption is seen by political analysts as one of the pillars of the government’s strategy for the 2026 electoral dispute. The measure also includes progressive discounts for salary ranges between R$5,000 and R$7,350, seeking to increase popular approval of the government at a strategic moment.
