The different armed conflicts that devastate the planet are causing many countries to return to the one of the priorities to which to allocate economic resources.
To provide answers to the Italian multinational Leonardo (dedicated to the defense, security and aerospace sectors) has presented its new multi-domain defense system that allows airspace to be defended from enemy rockets: the “Michelangelo’s Dome”.
As reported by the media specialized in defense the CEO and general director of Leonardo, Roberto Cingolani, has expressed that “the advanced integrated defense system project developed by Leonardo (baptized as Michelangelo Dome) was born from the need to defend and protect critical infrastructures, sensitive urban areas, territories and assets of national and European interestthrough a modular, open, scalable and multi-domain solution.
In this sense, Cingolani has highlighted that this new defense system “is being developed by a integrated team including the Ministry of Defense and the Italian Armed Forces. Without their contribution, we would only be talking about an illusory technological exercise. “The continued interaction and direct participation of the Armed Forces in the design of the system architecture, based on their needs and requirements, is absolutely essential, especially for programs of this magnitude.”
One of the characteristics that differentiates the “Michelangelo Dome” from the rest of the existing defensive systems is that it carries out a simultaneous and integrated management of heterogeneous threats. To do this, the system takes advantage of the interconnection between air, sea, land and space domains. This interaction arises within a cyber-secure environment supported by a sophisticated artificial intelligence system.
“The platform creates a dynamic security dome capable of detecting, tracking and neutralizing threats even in the event of large-scale attacksin all operational domains: air and missile threats (including hypersonic missiles and drone swarms), surface and submarine maritime attacks, and hostile ground forces,” explained the CEO and general director of Leonardo.
The company estimates that a initial version of the architecture of “Michelangelo’s Dome” It will be delivered to the Italian Ministry of Defense at the end of 2027.
