The president of , (), announced this Tuesday (2) the cancellation of the previously announced schedule for the hearing of , appointed by the president (PT) to the (Supreme Federal Court).
“This omission, which is the sole responsibility of the Executive Branch, is serious and unprecedented. It is an interference in the hearing schedule, a prerogative of the Legislative Branch,” stated Alcolumbre, referring to the fact that Planalto has not yet sent the documents relating to the nomination to the Senate.
According to the schedule previously announced by the president of the Senate, the Messiah hearing would take place on the 10th.
“Finally, to avoid the possible allegation of a procedural defect in the nomination process, given the possibility of holding the hearing without formally receiving the message, this presidency and the Senate’s CCJ determine the cancellation of the calendar presented.”
Lula announced the choice of Messias for the STF on November 20, but did not directly send the necessary documentation to the Senate to begin the process. Nominees for the Supreme Court only take up a seat on the court if they are approved with at least 41 favorable votes in the Senate, out of a total of 81 senators.
Five days after Lula’s announcement, Alcolumbre announced that the Senate would deliberate on Messias’ nomination on December 10. The deadline was considered tight by allies of the nominee, who is the target of resistance in the Senate. Messias was campaigning to reverse his disadvantage, a job that would be less difficult with more time to talk to senators.
Lula’s choice as Messias upset Alcolumbre and several sectors of the Senate, who wanted the former president of the Senate (-MG) to be chosen for the vacancy on the court.
The political tension unleashed by Messias’ nomination shook the alliance between Lula and the Senate, the House that provided the most support to the PT member throughout the current term.
