The minister, of the (Supreme Federal Court), stated that he did not comment on the appointment of the Union’s attorney general, to the court because he did not comment on a “politically controversial” topic.
“My ‘silence’ derives from a prudent distance from a politically controversial issue, still under consideration in the Federal Senate. At the appropriate time, AFTER the legitimate deliberation of the senators, I will be able to speak out, if appropriate”, he declared in a note.
As the Panel column showed, Dino was the Union’s attorney general, in public or private, due to his choice by Lula to fill Luís Roberto Barroso’s vacancy.
In the note, Dino states that he maintains the same careful stance since his nomination to the Supreme Court on issues related to Parliament, except on matters brought to the court for deliberation.
He also said he never had conflicts with Messiah.
“I never had any controversy with Dr. Jorge Messias, with whom I always had institutional dialogue on different topics (disarmament, parliamentary amendments to the Budget, environmental and tax issues, etc.).”
One of the main criticisms made by opponents of Messias’ nomination is that he would be “a new Dino” in . I.e,
The reason for the comparison made by opposition senators is the proximity between the nominee and Lula. Part of the government supporters also assess, behind the scenes, that Dino’s actions in relation to the amendments wear Messias down.
Since taking office at the STF, in 2024, Dino has tightened his grip on the lack of transparency and parliamentary amendments, a tool used by deputies and senators that generates more than R$50 billion a year.
Messias’ allies have said that he does not have a confrontation profile, unlike Dino. By this reasoning, it would be more likely that he would try to resolve problems with Congress in a more negotiated manner.
Under Messias already and, in October, defended a , arguing that the Supreme Court declare the constitutionality of the new flow of payments.
The appointment of the attorney general displeased the president of the Senate, (-AP), as well as several other members of the House. They wanted the nominee to be the former president of the Senate (-MG).
