Gotham Awards 2025: “It Was Just an Accident” is the big winner of the night

The film “It Was Just An Accident” was the big winner of the night Gotham Awardsan award ceremony that took place this Monday (1st), in New York, in the United States.

The screenwriter Jafar Panahidirector and screenwriter behind “It Was Just An Accident” received awards from Best Director, Best International Film and Best Original Screenplay.

Despite Pahani’s awards, the date also marks the sentencing him to one year in prison.

According to information from Variety magazine, the filmmaker was convicted of “propaganda activities” against the current government of Iran, his home country. According to his lawyer, the sentence includes a two-year travel ban and a ban on joining any political or social groups.

“It Was Just an Accident” tells the story of a former political prisoner, Vahid, who believes he recognized, upon hearing the creaking of his mechanical leg, the guard who tortured him years before. Convinced that he has found his tormentor, he kidnaps him and takes him to a desert, planning to bury him alive.

As he searches for other ex-detainees to confirm the man’s identity, doubts arise as to whether they really hit the target. The film mixes suspense, dark humor and moral dilemmas, questioning revenge, justice and memory.

With wins at the Gotham Awards, “It Was Just An Accident” surpassed the Brazilian, “The Secret Agent”, who also competed in the category of Best Original Screenplay.

For the national feature, Wagner Moura competed as Best Leading Performance, but didn’t win the award. See the list of award winners here.
