According to the court, the man worked in the management of the Mitiga prison in Tripoli, where several detainees were allegedly subjected to ill-treatment and abuse between 2015 and 2020.

Allegations of torture

The Libyan is accused of having participated in this treatment of the person and issued the regulations that enabled it, DPA specifies.

Federal police detained the suspect in July of this year at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport on the basis of an international arrest warrant issued by the ICC.

The panel of experts established by the UN Security Council previously documented the arbitrary detention, confiscation of property and sexual humiliation of female prisoners by male guards in the aforementioned facility in Tripoli.

The civil war broke out in Libya after the fall of the regime of the local leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, DPA reminds. To this day, countless militias and two hostile governments are fighting for power and influence in the country.
