The price of fuel fell this week, but it was barely felt. The Government took advantage of the moment to end the discount on the ISP, the tax on petroleum products. The Fuel Dealers Association says it is a “regrettable” decision.
Diesel should fall by 7 cents this week and gasoline by 3.5. But, in practice, diesel was only 4 cents cheaper and gasoline was one and a half cents cheaper. .
“It is regrettable that the only thing this Government knows how to do in the area of fuel is to increase taxes. It has done absolutely nothing else”, says João Durão, from (Anarec).
The updating of the tax on petroleum and energy products has been pressured by the European Commission. Brussels remembers that the relief was supposed to be temporary, as it happened due to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
Anarec remembers that Spain is in the same boat, but continues with prices that steal many customers from the Portuguese market.
The Government of Luís Montenegro told the European Commission that it would progressively update the rates. This is already the fifth increase.
