Are you looking for a recipe for a quick dish without meat? Then be sure to prepare an Advent salad whose main ingredient is herring. Even though it is called “Advent”, it is actually perfect at any time of the year, both as an addition to lunch and for a quick dinner. However, it must be admitted that it will be a real sensation on Christmas Eve. Check out this simple recipe and try it before Christmas.
As mentioned, the main ingredient of the Advent salad are herrings. They go perfectly with pickles and apples.
Potatoes are also an important ingredient of this salad. Thanks to them, it gains a velvety structure. Plus, it’s more filling.
The sauce also matters. My grandmother never used heavy mayonnaise for this dish. She replaced it with a dip made of oil, egg yolk and honey mustard.
What ingredients do we need to make Advent salad? Here is the exact list:
- 200 g herrings in oil;
- 2 pickled cucumbers;
- 2 pickled tomato peppers;
- 2 potatoes;
- 1 apple;
- 1 small red onion;
- 70 ml of oil;
- 1 yolk;
- 2 teaspoons of honey mustard;
- 1/2 lemon juice;
- a pinch of sugar and salt to taste;
- dill or parsley for decoration.
To make Advent salad, first prepare the additions: cut pickled cucumbers, pickled tomato peppers, apple and cooked and cooled potatoes into cubes. Put all these ingredients into one bowl. Then add the main ingredient, i.e. herring drained from oil, cut into smaller pieces.
In the next step, make the sauce: mix the yolk with oil and add honey mustard and lemon juice to the resulting mixture. Then season it with a pinch of sugar and salt. Mix the dip until smooth and pour it over the herrings and additions.
Finally, decorate dill or parsleystir gently and taste – season with salt if necessary. Put it in the fridge for at least 20 minutes to let all the ingredients mix together.
