Croatian police suspect a nun working in Zagreb of stabbing herself and then falsely claiming to be the victim of an attack, police said on Tuesday. News of her injuries and the alleged foreign perpetrator sparked outrage. TASR took over the report from the AFP agency.
She was admitted to a hospital in Zagreb on Friday with a minor abdominal injury caused by an unspecified sharp object. News of the nun’s injuries quickly spread on social media, along with claims that she was stabbed by a foreign worker or migrant in a religiously motivated attack.
According to unconfirmed reports, the perpetrator also allegedly shouted a Muslim catchphrase during the attack, prompting some to call for mass deportations. “The attack on the nun in Zagreb is an attack on the values of Croatian society and on Europe, whose roots come from Christianity,” said the controversial member of the Croatian Parliament, Marijana Petirová.
Police said on Tuesday that the 35-year-old woman had “self-inflicted stab wounds”. She then turned to the police claiming that she had been attacked by an unknown man. According to the police, the woman will face criminal charges for false reports of the commission of a crime.
