União Brasil appoints Rubinho to the presidency of the Chamber of SP – 12/01/2025 – Panel

The União Brasil bench of councilors chose Rubinho Nunes, a rival of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), as a candidate to succeed Ricardo Teixeira (União) for the presidency of the Municipal Council of . Councilors met on Monday night (1st).

The party is also considering suspending the membership of Teixeira, who did not participate in the meeting and has insisted on putting his name forward for re-election. The position of the president of the Chamber contradicts an agreement reached last year according to which his councilors would be in charge of the Chamber.

Teixeira, however, has the support of the mayor () and a significant part of the councilors, who have been pushing for him to remain in office.

Former president of the Chamber and president of the municipal directory, Milton Leite has defended compliance with the agreement and, therefore, Teixeira’s replacement.

Rubinho became disaffected with the mayor in 2024, when he decided to support Pablo Marçal (PRTB) in the dispute for Mayor of São Paulo. The Regional Electoral Court of São Paulo reversed, on Thursday (27), a decision it had made for publishing a false report involving the then candidate for mayor and now minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Guilherme Boulos (PSOL).

The command of the São Paulo City Council for four years was agreed last year with Nunes and his base parties during the electoral campaign, in exchange for support for the mayor in his quest for re-election.

In a statement, the party states that the “bench met independently, without the participation of the president of the municipal directory, Milton Leite, or other members of the Executive”.

“After the bench’s decision took place behind closed doors, the party met to ratify the chosen name and take appropriate legal measures to ensure compliance with said decision by other members”, he adds, in reference to Teixeira’s case.
