Wagner Moura and ‘The Secret Agent’ leave the Gotham Awards without trophies

The Gotham Awards opened the new film awards season in the United States on Monday (1st). The independent film ceremony was held in New York. The Brazilian film “” lost both categories in which it was nominated.

The actor competed for the trophy for Best Leading Performance, which went to the British Sopé Dìrísù, from the film “The Shadow of My Father”. “The Secret Agent” also competed in the Best Original Screenplay category, but was beaten by “It Was Just an Accident”, directed by Iranian Jafar Panahi. On the same day he was awarded, the Iranian filmmaker was sentenced to one year in prison for propaganda against his country’s government.

“The Secret Agent” opened in theaters in November and is Brazil’s big bet in this international awards season. At the 78th edition of the , the film won the Palme d’Or in the categories of Best Male Performance, Best Director, Critics’ Award and Art and Essay.

From the director, “The Secret Agent” takes place in Recife in 1977. The film tells the story of Marcelo, a man who arrives in the capital of Pernambuco during Carnival week, running away from his past and looking for a new life.
