The future of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is uncertain. It was occupied by Russia during the war of aggression and is currently running on emergency generators. Since April 2024, all reactors have been shut down cold, the temperature is low enough that the cooling water does not evaporate and the risk is manageable. However, it is questionable whether the power plant can be put back into operation: During operation, the cooling water was supplied from a reservoir that leaked. Most recently, Russia pointed out in October that an external power source was particularly necessary for a resumption, which was destroyed by fighting.
