Fraud in welfare programs was revealed in Minnesota. Donald Trump responded by criticizing Somali migrants and calling for changes that will affect the community there.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized Somali immigrants coming to the United States. At a meeting of his cabinet, he drew attention to the extensive problems of this East African country and declared that Somalis bring nothing to American society. TASR writes about it according to the AP and AFP agencies.
In Somalia, “they’ve got nothing but running around killing each other,” Trump told a cabinet meeting. “Their country is not good for a reason. Their country is terrible and we don’t want them in our country,” said the US president, according to whom Somali migrants are too dependent on the welfare system and contribute nothing to American society. He called on the migrants to return to Somalia and try to fix their country.
They criticize the scandals
In recent days, Trump and other representatives of his government have been increasingly harsh towards Somalis living in the US. This is happening at a time when a scandal broke out in Minnesota, in which a billion dollars intended for social programs was embezzled during the pandemic of the disease COVID-19. Several people from the local Somali community were allegedly involved in the fraud, and the Ministry of Finance is investigating suspicions that some of the embezzled funds also ended up in the hands of the Somali terrorist group al-Shabaab.
The US president last week ended deportation protections for Somalis that had been in place in the United States since 1991, when Somalia’s civil war broke out. According to AP, federal immigration authorities are already preparing for large-scale raids in Minnesota, which will be aimed mainly at Somalis living in the US illegally. AP reminds that Minnesota is home to the largest Somali community in the entire United States. Many settled there mainly for the welcoming social programs. Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, noted that approximately 95 percent of Somalis in Minnesota are already US citizens.
