Federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) said he received with “optimism” the news that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke over the phone about tariffs and the current relationship between the countries.
Until recently, to negotiate a relaxation of sanctions.
This time, the parliamentarian stated that “frank dialogue between two countries can open important paths”, and that “sanctions are never an end in themselves; they are legitimate instruments to correct serious violations when other paths have been blocked”.

The deputy also pointed out that any progress between bilateral relations will require facing “Brazil’s current institutional crisis and reaffirming freedom as an essential foundation among democratic nations”.
Lula spoke with the American leader for around 40 minutes. The conversation, considered productive by both parties, focused on the trade agenda between the two countries and on strengthening cooperation against international organized crime. The Brazilian president assessed as positive the removal of the 40% additional tariff that affected Brazilian exports such as meat, coffee and fruit — but highlighted that there are still sensitive sectors subject to surcharges and that Brazil wants to speed up negotiations to alleviate costs.
In addition to the tariffs against Brazilian products, Trump imposed the Magnitsky law on the Federal Supreme Court minister, Alexandre de Moraes, and revoked the visas of several authorities. Both measures were defended by Eduardo Bolsonaro, who sought Trump’s support in an attempt to reverse the convictions against Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
