The Union’s attorney general, , asked for support from the Federal Council of Medicine for his , in a meeting this Tuesday afternoon (2) in Brasília with members of the body’s board of directors.
O has a history of friction with the left over positions aligned with conservatism on issues such as combating sex and treatments for gender change.
Messias, who requested the conversation, said he was there to rebuild bridges and promised to respect the CFM’s positions on medical issues that he would judge in court. He said he has a lot of appreciation for the medical profession, having two sisters who are pediatricians.
An evangelical, he said he was personally against abortion and in favor of life, but reaffirmed his support for the current legislation.
He also did not want to commit to a CFM resolution that bans fetal asystole, a form of abortion, for fetuses after 22 weeks. The regulation was blocked by the STF.
Messias has been touring entities in search of support for his candidacy for the STF. He has also met with the (National Conference of Brazilian Bishops), for example.
According to a participant at the meeting, Lula’s nominee left a good impression and was seen as a potential ally of the CFM in the Supreme Court.
