More than two million people in Portugal have had, or could develop, a hernia. The information is advanced by (SPHPA), which explains that inguinal hernias alone (the most common) affect between 15% and 20% of the population.

In statements to SPHPA states that the SNS performs around 20 thousand surgeries of this type per year.
