MST demands Lula for resources for rural education – 12/03/2025 – Panel

national coordinator of , states that the (National Education Program in ) is experiencing difficulties and needs a budget of R$ 100 million to be able to promote 50 courses in 2026. He recorded a video this Tuesday (2) in which he asks the president (PT) to release resources for the program.

Pronera was created in 1998, seeking to serve those created or recognized by Incra, quilombola communities and beneficiaries of the PNCF (National Land Credit Program). In 2023, when the program completed 25 years, the government estimated that more than 190,000 young people and adults had gone through the program.

“As incredible as it may seem, whether now or in 2024, there were resource limitations. And for 26, even worse. Because we have more than 50 courses approved by the Pronera board, which would require a budget of R$100 million, which is a pittance for the public budget, and the money does not exist”, explains Stedile, in the video.

“Hello, hello, dear President Lula. Send our dear Camilo [Santana, ministro da Educação]release R$100 million. And if it’s not his, send Fernando Haddad [ministro da Fazenda] foresee the R$ 100 million, which should give two days of interest on the Selic rate that we are paying to the banks, the internal public debt. So, I am making this appeal on behalf of all activists. We need 100 million reais to make it possible for thousands of young peasants from all over Brazil to study”, adds Stedile, one of the main leaders of the MST.

Historically, President Lula’s relationship with the movement is marked by . The moments of greatest affinity tend to happen when Lula is weakened.

At Pronera, courses are created through partnerships between social movements —mainly — and universities. Generally, students leave their settlements and semester studies are concentrated in a shorter period with a greater workload. The program’s resources help, above all, to maintain students during this period.

The projects cover EJA, the secondary professional level, undergraduate, specialization and master’s degrees. It also includes training courses for educators and continuing training for teachers in areas of agrarian reform.
