PF launches Operation Power OFF against group suspected of hacker attacks on institutional websites

Investigation targets administrators and users of illegal DDoS platforms; actions have the international support of the FBI

PF Disclosure
Group carried out attacks on Brazilian strategic bodies

A Operation Power OFF launched this Wednesday (3), which investigates a criminal association dedicated to offering distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on demand — a practice known in the digital underworld as booters and stressers. These services, sold illegally on the internet, allow anyone to carry out cyber attacks even without technical knowledge.

Four search and seizure warrants and two temporary arrest warrants were executed in the cities of São Caetano do Sul (SP), and Tubarão (SC). The targets are administrators of illegal platforms and customers who would have contracted the attacks to reach systems considered strategic.

The investigations had international support from the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). According to the PF, the services operated on cloud servers spread across several countries and were used by users around the world. Among the attacks already attributed to platform contractors are offensives against bodies such as the Federal Police (2020), SERPRO, DATAPREV and the Integrated Telematics Center of the Brazilian Army (2018).

Those under investigation may be held liable for criminal association and for interrupting or disrupting telematics or public information services.

The action is part of a joint strategy that brings together police, law enforcement agencies and academic institutions, reinforcing the PF’s efforts to combat cybercrimes that threaten digital security and the continuity of essential services in the country.
