Andrej Plenkovič declared that the Jadranski naftovod can fully supply Slovakia and Hungary with oil. The EU plans to end imports of Russian oil by 2027.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovič announced on Wednesday that the state-owned oil carrier, Jadranski naftovod (JANAF), can fully supply Slovakia and Hungary. According to him, it is therefore not necessary for these countries to request an exemption from the sanctions of the European Union and the United States on the import of Russian oil. HINA agency drew attention to it, writes TASR.
Representatives of the Council of the EU and the European Parliament (EP) agreed on the night of Wednesday in Brussels to gradually end all imports of Russian natural gas by autumn 2027. The preliminary agreement still needs to be approved by the member states in the Council of the EU and MEPs before formal adoption.
Plan to end imports
According to the agreement, next year the European Commission is also to present a plan for the gradual end of Russian oil imports to Slovakia and Hungary by the end of 2027. Both countries have long criticized the EU’s intention to completely cut off imports of Russian gas and oil. The Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico, described the Commission’s proposal as part of the REPowerEU initiative as ideological and harmful not only for Slovakia, but also for the entire Union.
Capacity Adriatic pipeline
In this context, Plenkovič recalled that JANAF can transport more than 15 million tons of oil to Hungary and Slovakia, which is sufficient for their refineries to work at full capacity. He also rejected criticism that technical limitations prevented it.
