Animal seemed to be lost. He wasn’t old enough to drink, according to New Zealand rules. And salmon remains on the menu.
A Portuguese, a Spanish and an English person enter a bar… with a seal. It could be a joke – but the seal part is real.
It happened in New Zealand, in Richmond. Same. Last Sunday, a small seal, apparently lost but at the same time curious, entered a bar. I wouldn’t be of legal drinking age.
It was placed under the dishwasher – this after the owner thought it was a dog, when he saw something passing by him (he wasn’t surprised because the bar is pet-friendly).
“Everyone was in shock,” said owner Bella Evans. “My God! What do we do? What is happening?”, he quotes at .
One customer even grabbed a shirt and tried to lead the seal out through the back door. But the seal managed to escape. And there he went under the dishwasher.
Then another customer showed up with a dog carrier; Bella Evans devised a plan to attract the seal – with a pizza ingredient the pub was offering as a promotion.
The priority was defined: “I just went to my fiancé and said to him: ‘Take the salmon! Get the salmon!’”
A baby seal, apparently lost, curious and well below New Zealand’s legal drinking age, galumphed into a bar before being removed by rangers with the help of a dog crate and some salmon.

The rangers meanwhile showed up. They were already following the seal’s trail – because that was the fourth phone call of the day about the walking seal.
The seal was released on nearby Coelhos Island – considered a safe place as it does not allow the presence of dogs
Bella Evans now has a story to tell; I had never had an “unruly customer” that I had to throw out. But if the seal appears again, it will be welcome.
Salmon remains on the menu.
