Family members of Rafael Tundares, son-in-law of former Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, denounce the 30-year prison sentence for conspiracy and other crimes against the government of Nicolás Maduro.
The former presidential candidate and father of Tundares’ wife, González Urrutia, commented on the case on his account on X. In the text, Maduro’s opponent classified the conviction as something “outside democratic legality”.
“Arbitrariness displays fragility. Every public decision must comply with the law, or it falls outside democratic legitimacy. Therefore, I reject the sentence imposed on Rafael. It is a decision without legal support, incompatible with the Constitution and used as a political reprisal to try to affect me and distort the will expressed by Venezuelans”, says an excerpt.

Mariana González de Tundares, Rafael’s wife and daughter of the former candidate, also said in a statement that the conviction, which took place on Monday (1st), was finalized without the family being notified of any specific accusations against her husband.
In the publication, Mariana states that her husband faced a trial in which his rights were violated since his arrest in January, when his defense lawyer was denied access to the process.
“I was told once again that the process is confidential due to the ‘nature of the case’, which represents a serious violation of the rights and judicial guarantees that Rafael had. I will not give up and, despite the adverse circumstances, I will continue to fight through all humanitarian means for the life, freedom, personal integrity and rights of my husband”, highlights an excerpt from the publication.
Rafael Tundares was arrested on January 7, three days before Nicolás Maduro assumed the presidency. At the time, González’s family classified the arrest as a “kidnapping” in retaliation for Edmundo’s participation in the presidential race.
