Coup plot: Anderson Torres gives up filing an appeal against conviction

The former Minister of Justice and Public Security was sentenced to 24 years in prison for participating in the coup plan that resulted in the events of 8/1

The defense informed this Wednesday (3) that the former Minister of Justice and Public Security asked his lawyers not to present new appeals against the decision of the First Panel of the (Supreme Federal Court). He was sentenced to 24 years in prison for participating in the coup plot that resulted in the events of January 8th.

According to Torres’ lawyers, the former minister will serve the sentence imposed “even if he is unresigned”. He also made himself available to collaborate with administrative activities of the 19th Military Police Battalion of the Federal District, where he is imprisoned. Since November 25, Anderson and other defendants in the coup investigation began serving their respective sentences by decision of the STF minister.

In a statement sent to Young PanTorres’ defense stated that he “will not renounce the right to seek, at the appropriate time, full knowledge of his innocence.”

UNDERSTAND

Anderson Torres was part of the so-called central nucleus in the investigation into the coup plot. The group would have been responsible for organizing the coup attempt after the victory of (PT) in the 2022 election and the execution of the current head of the Executive, Moraes and the vice-president (PSB).

The former Minister of Justice and Public Security for five crimes:

  • Armed criminal organization: 5 years;
  • Attempt to violently abolish the democratic rule of law: 6 years;
  • Attempted coup d’état: 8 years;
  • Damage qualified by violence and serious threat: 2 years and 6 months, in addition to a 50-day fine;
  • Deterioration of listed property: 2 years and 6 months, in addition to a 50-day fine.

With him, the former president, the general, the former minister of the Civil House, the former Minister of Defense Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, the former Navy commander Almir Garnier, the federal deputy (PL-RJ), and former aide-de-camp were tried.
