Flamengo is one cup away from having its most sensational year – 12/03/2025 – The World Is a Ball

Flamengo is Brazilian champion.

Discounting the 1987 Copa União, a controversial national title, disregarded by the Federal Supreme Court, the red and black team from Rio now has eight cups in the country’s main competition, behind only Palmeiras (12), which faces a melancholic end to the year.

But 2025 goes, for the most popular team in the country (around 30 million to 45 million fans, depending on the survey), far beyond the Brazilian Championship.

So far this year, there have been four trophies among the more than one hundred (considering only those obtained in professional football) in the Flamengo gallery in Gávea.

Under the command of young coach Filipe Luís, 40, former left-back for the club and the Brazilian national team, Flamengo has won since January, in order of importance, Libertadores (last Saturday), Brasileiro (now), Brazilian Super Cup (in February) and Rio State (in March).

The block of achievements serves to equal the Quadruple Crown of 2020 (Brazilian Championship, Brazilian Super Cup, Recopa Sul-Americana and Rio State Cup), considered the most memorable year so far for the association that is always remembered for having as its greatest idol Zico, one of the best Brazilian players in history.

Zico mentioned, the most attentive and detailed Flamengo player, will mention that in 1981, when Galinho de Quintino was in command, top scorer that he was, of the red and black actions on the field, the team won five cups.

It’s a fact. There was the Libertadores (the first of the current four), the Intercontinental Cup (Interclub World Cup, beating Liverpool 3-0 in Japan) and the State Championship. However, the other two titles have less relevance, as they are from international events (Copa Punta del Este and Naples Tournament) that had a single edition. Almost no one remembers them or praises them.

Therefore, the comparison is valid between 2020 (a team well remembered for having the goalscorer Gabigol, now at Cruzeiro) and 2025. Which of these years is the most glorious for Flamengo?

Qualitatively, it is already 2025, as there is the Libertadores on the list of achievements. Quantitatively, it can still be equal to 1981, but with all the titles of recognized relevance.

Bruno Henrique, Danilo, De Arrascaeta and company will also compete, from the 10th, in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. He will take Cruz Azul (Mexico). Winning, Pyramids (Egypt), on the 14th. Winning, the final, on the 17th, against Paris Saint-Germain (France).

Her winner will be one of this year’s world champions. Yes, due to these things that only football provides (in this case an aberration, in my opinion), 2025 will have two world champions, with no differentiation for FIFA.

One of them is Chelsea, who in July beat Palmeiras and Fluminense before beating PSG 3-0 in the final in New Jersey (USA), in the first FIFA World Cup with 32 participants. In this super world cup, Flamengo stopped in the round of 16, 4-2 against the German Bayern Munich.

The other will be the winner of the Intercontinental Cup, in the final two weeks from now, in Al Rayyan, Qatar.

It’s not Muldialzão, it’s Muldialzinho. But Flamengo has nothing to do with FIFA’s inconsistencies and, even with a squad exhausted by an exhausting year, pushed, from near or far, by the tireless red and black mass, it will seek strength to obtain its second world cup.

2025 is already won for Flamengo. It can only improve. The Quintuple Crown would make it the most sensational of its 130 years. A unique year.
