Folha and centennial newspapers are honored by ANJ – 12/03/2025 – Poder

ANJ () will honor the Sheet and 12 other press outlets with more than a hundred years of existence for contributing to the country’s history and democracy.

“In Brazil, it is very difficult for a company to reach one hundred years old. When a newspaper reaches one hundred years old, it is a demonstration of society’s trust”, says Marcelo Reich, executive president of ANJ.

The tribute will take place this Thursday (4) in the ESPM Tech auditorium, in Vila Mariana, a neighborhood in the south of São Paulo. THE Sheet was founded in 1921 and will complete in February 2026.

Also on the list of honorees are the newspapers O Estado de S. Paulo (150 years old), A Tribuna (from Santos, 131 years old), Correio do Povo (from Porto Alegre, 130 years old), Cruzeiro do Sul (from Sorocaba, 122 years old), Jornal do Commercio (from Manaus, 121 years old), ACidade On (from Ribeirão Preto, 120 years old), Monitor Mercantil (from Rio de Janeiro, 113 years old), A Tarde (from Salvador, 113 years old), Gazeta do Povo (from Curitiba, 106 years old), Jornal do Commercio (from Recife, 106 years old), A Notícia (from Joinville, 102 years old) and O Globo (100 years old).

During the event, the entity will also award the 2025 ANJ Press Freedom Award and promote a panel to discuss the use of media by media outlets.

ANJ will deliver commemorative plaques to century-old newspapers and will make the gesture a recurring practice. In other words, all associated newspapers that turn one hundred years old will be honored by the entity.

“Credibility cannot be built overnight. These are stories built over a century, going through a series of tests, difficulties and challenges. Reaching one hundred years is an unequivocal demonstration that these brands and these vehicles have gained respect and credibility”, says Reich.

The president of the association says that many of the vehicles are regional – the 13 are distributed across 11 cities and 8 states – and that they contributed to the growth of their respective areas. “These are necessary means for communities to continue seeing each other, debating and being aware of the facts”, he adds.

This year’s ANJ Press Freedom Award will be awarded to , a non-profit organization that works to defend freedom of expression, freedom of the press and access to information.

Reich states that the institute has worked to help identify misinformation on social media. “The media education part, ultimately, is a way of combating misinformation.”

Palavra Aberta was founded in August 2010 by ANJ, (Aner), the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (Abert) and the then Brazilian Association of Advertising Agencies (Abap), currently the Collective Articulation Space of the Advertising Ecosystem.

The institute publishes a Sheet and is chaired by Patricia Blanco, who was part of the last term of the newspaper’s Editorial Board. Among the organization’s 25 advisors are journalists Roberto Muylaert, Mônica Waldvogel and Eugênio Bucci, as well as Judith Brito, superintendent of Grupo Folha.

Shortly after the award and honors are presented, Patricia Blanco will participate in the panel “AI and the future of “, which will discuss ethical principles and the challenges of applying an ever-changing environment.

“It is a tool that, if not used well, can be quite disastrous. The responsible and well-applied use of AI by vehicles is a potential lever for greater precision in communication”, says Reich.

Also participating in the panel will be the Editorial Director of SheetSérgio Dávila; the Director of Journalism at Grupo Estado, Eurípedes Alcântara, and the Editorial Director of the newspaper O Globo, Alan Gripp. The discussion will be mediated by the executive director of Journalism and Sport at Grupo RBS, Marta Gleich.
