Macron called on China to support peace efforts to end the war: President Xi reiterated Beijing’s position

  • Macron called on China to cooperate in stopping Russian attacks on Ukraine.
  • The two presidents discussed the responsibility of the members of the UN Security Council.
  • President Xi emphasized China’s pursuit of peace through dialogue and a lasting solution.
  • China has not condemned the 2022 Russian invasion.

French President Emmanuel Macron called on China to join his country’s efforts to stop Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, he said this on Thursday during a visit to Beijing. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency. As permanent members of the UN Security Council, both countries have a special responsibility, said Macron at a press conference with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Xi reiterated Beijing’s position that China is pursuing peace and hopes that the two sides will achieve lasting peace through dialogue. He added that his country wants to continue to play a constructive role, but rejects attempts to shift the blame to others. Beijing is considered Russia’s most important supporter, as most Western countries have severed ties with Moscow after the large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the German agency reminds.

So far, China has not condemned the Russian offensive, which has caused enormous suffering to the civilian population in Ukraine. Beijing has also been accused of supporting the Russian defense sector by supplying goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. Before traveling to China, Macron met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris on Monday, where they discussed US efforts to end the war.
