The former head of EU diplomacy Federica Mogherini announced this Thursday his resignation as rector of the College of Europe, a position she has held since May 2020, after her indictment for a case of corruption with European funds that affects this institution.

Belgian police arrested Mogherini on Tuesday as part of an investigation into alleged fraud and corruption in public procurement, among other crimes related to training funded by the European Union for young diplomats, after having searched the headquarters of the European Union External Action Service and the College of Europe in Bruges.

In addition to the headquarters of both institutions, the police also searched the homes of Mogherini and two other defendants in this case. The Italian was in charge of the bloc’s foreign policy between 2014 and 2019. Since September 2020, she was rector of the prestigious College of Europe, a university where a good part of the EU diplomats are trained.

According to ‘Politico’, the other two defendants would be the former secretary general of the Foreign Action Service and current director general of the European Commission for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf, also Italian Stefano Sannino, and Cesare Zegretti, co-director of the office of education, training and executive projects of the College of Europe.
