The mayor () invited the PT bench to a meeting this Wednesday (3) in which (União), president of the city’s City Council, will also participate.
At the meeting, the emedebista must discuss the re-election of his ally, who faces opposition from his own party, whose bench nominated Rubinho Nunes (União) as a candidate for succession.
Nunes told the Panel that he is considering appointing Rubinho, his rival, to the presidency of the Chamber. The discomfort with the councilor arose last year, when he decided to support Pablo Marçal (PRTB) in the dispute against the mayor in the municipal election.
The official topic of this Wednesday’s meeting is the municipal budget. However, with the tense dispute for command of the House imminent, the main topic should be the election, scheduled for December 15th.
Nunes states that he will not ask for a vote for his candidate at the meeting.
“Me asking for a vote for the PT is bad, even with the good relationship I have with them, and I don’t think it’s necessary, they can’t vote for Rubinho”, he says.
Ricardo Nunes has a history of strong opposition to the PT, but sees Rubinho Nunes’ anti-PTism as an opportunity to gain the party’s support for his candidate in the Chamber.
The mayor had the support of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in his run for re-election last year and defends that the MDB, his party, does not support Lula (PT) in 2026.
Last year, an agreement was reached with Nunes and the parties in his support base according to which the presidency of the House would remain with the party for four years. The group of Union councilors, in turn, signed a document that said there would be rotation among its councilors in the presidency.
Teixeira was one of the signatories, but now wishes to remain in office, supported by Mayor Nunes. União Brasil threatens to suspend or expel him.
The Union’s main leader in São Paulo, Milton Leite, presses for the maintenance of the agreement and the appointment of Rubinho Nunes. The dispute between the mayor and the former president of the City Council has divided the House.
