Son-in-law of Maduro opponent is sentenced to 30 years in prison in Venezuela, says family

Rafael Tudares, son-in-law of Edmundo González Urrutia, was sentenced by the government of Nicolás Maduro in a trial denounced as “clandestine, inhumane and full of irregularities”

Rafael Tudares Bracho, son-in-law of former Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, was sentenced to 30 years in prison following a judicial process that his family denounces as “clandestine, inhumane and full of irregularities” led by the government of Nicolás Maduro.

The sentence was handed down after a single hearing lasting more than 12 hours, without access to an independent defense and with the process kept confidential since September, according to a statement released by his wife, Mariana González de Tudares.

Tudares’ family claims that he was in a situation of forced disappearance for 11 months, without regular contact with his trusted lawyer, and that the accusation was based on an alleged association with an unknown person, without concrete evidence.

Mariana highlighted that the conviction is political retaliation motivated exclusively by the family bond with the opposition leader, highlighting that Rafael is innocent of accusations of conspiracy and other serious crimes.

Edmundo González Urrutia classified the sentence as arbitrary and part of a systematic strategy by the Chavista regime to intimidate opponents and their families.

He denounced the violation of constitutional principles and international treaties, highlighting that the use of the judicial system to punish relatives of political opponents highlights the fragility of the regime and the confusion between power and impunity.
