Der Spiegel magazine says it has had access to a document that summarizes a call between European leaders, during which several governments expressed their concerns regarding the peace negotiations led by the North Americans
French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly warned European leaders that “there is a chance that the US could betray Ukraine in relation to the territory without clarity on security guarantees”, reported the German magazine, citing a call between European leaders.
According to The Guardian, Spiegel said it had obtained a note in English summarizing the telephone conversation, with what it claims were direct quotes from some of the participants. The magazine says that Macron considered the tense moment of the peace negotiations to be “a great danger” for Zelensky, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz adding that the Ukrainian leader – also present on the call – needed to be “very careful”.
“They are playing with us and with you,” said Merz, which the magazine concluded was a reference to Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The magazine reports that other leaders also expressed their concerns, with Alexander Stubb, president of Finland, saying that “we cannot leave Ukraine and Volodymyr alone with these guys”.
Even NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte – who, publicly, is a great supporter of Trump – said he agreed with Stubb, that “we have to protect Volodymyr”, describes The Guardian, which quotes Spiegel and warns that it did not have access to the document in question.
Der Spiegel said it had spoken to “several” participants in the call, who confirmed that it took place, and two of them said that the quotes were “reproduced exactly”.
According to The Guardian, Zelensky’s spokesman refused to comment, as did Merz’s office, while the Élysée Palace disputed the quotes attributed to Macron.
