Bolsonaro announces support for his eldest son and PL follows him: Flávio is the name chosen for the presidential elections

The appearance of the name Flávio Bolsonaro has already reached the Brazilian markets

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro signaled that he intends to support his eldest son, the country’s still senator, Flávio Bolsonaro, as a candidate for president in the 2026 elections, according to CNN Brasil this Friday.

“Confirmed. Flávio told me that our Captain ratified his candidacy. Bolsonaro spoke, it is spoken. We are together”, highlighted the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, quoted by O Globo.

According to anonymous sources close to the Bolsonaro family, the former president, who is detained for participating in a coup d’état, revealed his plans to his eldest son during a visit to the Federal Police headquarters in Brasília, where he is serving 27 years in prison.

The news comes after, in October, Michelle Bolsonaro, wife of the former Brazilian president, offered the possibility of running for the same elections.

That month, and in response to the France-Press agency (AFP), Michelle Bolsonaro stressed that “any decision on possible candidacies will go through an in-depth debate” with her husband. “And it will be the result of prayers to discern the mission that God eventually wants to entrust to me”, declared the former first lady, aged 43.

The appearance of the name Flávio Bolsonaro in the race for Palácio da Alvorada has already reached Brazilian markets this Friday, with the country’s currency devaluing more than 1.5% against the US dollar and the reference stock index Bovespa falling 1.8%.

In addition to Bolsonaro’s family members, other candidates on the right have appeared to run against Lula da Silva, president of Brazil since January 2023, such as Ronaldo Caiado, governor of Goiás, Ratinho Jr., governor of Paraná, Romeu Zema, governor of Minas Gerais and Tarcísio de Freitas, governor of São Paulo.
