Financial Times includes Moraes in list of most influential – 12/05/2025 – Power

The minister, of the (Supreme Federal Court), is the only Brazilian to be included in the list of the 25 most influential people of the year made by the British newspaper Financial Times, which included him in the “heroes” category.

Released this Friday (5), the list includes names such as the Puerto Rican singer and the American banker, CEO of Goldman Sachs. Moraes was cited as a highlight “at a time when many supreme courts have given in to authoritarianism and while democratic institutions have demonstrated fragility in the face of populist and far-right leaders.”

The justification for choosing the minister, citing his performance while in the STF that sentenced the former president (PL) to more than , was written by the historian and anthropologist .

“Moraes’ actions in confronting attacks on the electoral system, in dismantling disinformation networks and in holding public figures accountable strengthened, in Brazil, the collective understanding that the Constitution is not a mere decoration,” he wrote.

The historian also considered that centralized decisions and the use of “exceptional legal instruments” create a “tension” between firmness and excess.

“In democracies, power must always be subject to counterbalances, even when exercised in the name of protection. Paying attention to the risks inherent in the use of such broad powers is part of the democratic practice that Moraes helped to safeguard.”

In the “heroes” category, in which the minister was included, there are six other people, including the American actress and activist.

The list, according to the newspaper, was made from the choice of reporters, columnists and editors of the publication. The text that presents the names says that those chosen can influence the world for better or worse. “We leave the conclusion to you, readers”, says the vehicle.
