IGAS opens investigation into case of baby taken by mother from Gaia Hospital

The inspection process “aims to evaluate the safety mechanisms in that hospital unit”.

The four-month-old baby who returned to Gaia hospital on Thursday late afternoon, after being delivered to GNR dos Carvalhos, is already in an institution. But, this morning, the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS) informs that it has opened an investigation.

“Following news released by the media, on December 4, 2025, regarding the removal of a four-month-old baby by the mother from the pediatric internment at the Hospital Eduardo Santos Silva, integrated into the Local Health Unit of Gaia / Espinho, EPE, bypassing security measures, an inspection process was initiated, by order of the Inspector General of December 4, 2025”.

As IGAS states, the objective of this “inspection process” is to “evaluate the safety mechanisms in that hospital unit”.
