Maduro risks ‘portunhol’ and asks for support from Brazilians after threats from Trump

The dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, ventured into Portuguese this Thursday (4) to ask for the support of the Brazilian people for his country on a state TV program, amid growing tension with the United States. “Victory belongs to us. Long live the unity of the people of Brazil, long live the unity with the Venezuelan people”, said Maduro, delivering a “portunhol”.

“People of Brazil, take to the streets to support Venezuela in its fight for peace and sovereignty. I tell you the whole truth: we have the right to peace with sovereignty. Long live Brazil.” Maduro mentioned Brazil when thanking him for receiving a cap from the Landless People’s Movement (MST) during the live broadcast.

Concern

In recent months, the United States has attacked vessels in the Caribbean and the Pacific, which, according to the American military, were drug traffickers. The American government also warned airlines to avoid flying over Venezuelan territory, carried out military exercises in international waters near Venezuelan jurisdiction and sent the largest aircraft carrier in the world, the USS Gerald Ford, near the South American coast. Secret operations by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) were also authorized in Venezuela.

According to the Trump administration, Maduro leads a drug cartel called “Cartel de los Soles”. The Venezuelan government denies this and says the US seeks to overthrow Maduro and obtain Venezuela’s oil. Publicly, Maduro has been asking for peace, even singing the song Imagine, by John Lennon, and dancing with university students, although he has reinforced that he does not want “a peace for slaves”. The dictator also reinforced security measures in his surroundings.

Maduro and Trump spoke by phone in November. In the same month, Brazilian businessman Joesley Batista traveled to Venezuela in an attempt to find a negotiated way out of the crisis, with the resignation of the Venezuelan president.
