Passengers are hastily evacuated from plane after fire at baggage claim in Guarulhos

Passengers on a Latam flight had to be hurriedly removed from the plane after the baggage conveyor connected to the aircraft caught fire at Guarulhos International Airport on Thursday night (4). All 169 travelers were evacuated safely, no one was injured and the situation was quickly brought under control, the airline said.

In a statement, Latam reported that there was a “start of fire in ground equipment belonging to a third-party company, responsible for loading cargo for the flight”. According to the company, “the smoke generated by the equipment triggered safety protocols”. Everyone was removed from the aircraft “with the help of employees trained for this type of situation”.

A group of 159 passengers was reaccommodated on a flight that disembarked at 2:54 am this Friday (5), at Porto Alegre airport. Another 10 will travel on other airline flights or by land.
