The actor will adapt a great classic of Brazilian literature into cinema. This Friday (5) Conspiração Filmes announced that Selton will direct and star in The Alienist, a screen version of the work by Machado de Assis.
The artist takes on the role of Doctor Simão Bacamarte, a doctor who arrives in the city of Itaguaí to found an asylum for the treatment of mental disorders, Casa Verde. The work will have a current reinterpretation and will propose reflections on themes such as mental health and limits of power. The Alienist is still in the development phase and there is no release date.
In a statement, Selton states that adapting Machado’s book is “a dream of more than 20 years”. “Who is crazy? What is the fine line between reason and insanity? […] Machado de Assis is our absolute master of literature and the time has come to offer this stupendous story to the general public”, he says.
According to Conspiração Filmes, The Alienist is the first of two partnerships between the producer and the actor. Selton comes from an important moment in his career, working in winner of the Oscar for Best International Film, and in Anaconda, his debut in a Hollywood production.
